One evening, just as the sun was setting over the forest, two men stood in a big clearing, complaining loudly about the Normans. The older of the two men was a swineherd. He looked very wild with his thick hair and large beard, and in his belt he had a long knife and a horn. Around his neck he had a metal collar, like a dog’s collar, on which it said, ‘Gurth, the son of Beowulph, is born slave of Cedric of Rotherwood’.
The other man was a jester (другой мужчина был шутом; jester – шутник; шут). He wore a bright purple and yellow jacket (он был одет в яркую пурпурно-желтую куртку) and a hat with bells on it (и шляпу с бубенчиками /на ней/; bell – колокол; звонок, бубенчик). In his belt he had a wooden sword (за поясом у него был деревянный меч). Like his friend (как и у его друга), the jester also had a collar around his neck (у шута тоже был ошейник на шее: «вокруг шеи»), with the words (со словами), ‘Wamba, son of Witless, is the slave of Cedric of Rotherwood (Вамба, сын Безмозглого, раб Седрика Ротервудского; wit – разум, ум; witless – безмозглый, глупый)’ written on it (написанными на нем).

The other man was a jester. He wore a bright purple and yellow jacket and a hat with bells on it. In his belt he had a wooden sword. Like his friend, the jester also had a collar around his neck, with the words, ‘Wamba, son of Witless, is the slave of Cedric of Rotherwood’ written on it.
Suddenly, the two men heard the sound of horses (вдруг двое мужчин услышали топот лошадей; sound – звук, шум) from among the trees behind them (/раздававшийся/ из-за деревьев позади них). A group of men came riding up (группа мужчин подъехала верхом; to come up – подниматься, повышаться; подходить, приближаться; to ride – передвигаться на каком-либо виде транспорта; ехать верхом) to the swineherd and the jester (к свинопасу и шуту). The first was the rich Prior Aymer (первый /из них/ был богатый приор Эймер; prior – приор, настоятель /в католических монастырях/), riding on a fat mule (верхом на тучном муле; fat – толстый, упитанный). Behind him came Brian de Bois-Guilbert, a Norman knight (за ним ехал Бриан де Буа-Гильбер, норманнский рыцарь), who rode a big strong horse (который ехал верхом на большом сильном коне). He wore chain-mail under a red robe (на нем была кольчуга под красным одеянием; to wear – быть одетым /во что-либо/, носить одежду /и т. п./; robe – халат; одеяние, покров) with the white cross of a Templar on it (с белым крестом тамплиера на нем /на одеянии/; Templar – истор. тамплиер, храмовник, рыцарь храма /член католического духовно-рыцарского ордена, основанного в XII веке в Иерусалиме/). “Can you tell us the way to Cedric the Saxon (можете ли вы указать нам дорогу к Седрику Саксу; to tell – говорить, сказать; сообщать)?” the Prior asked Gurth and Wamba (приор спросил у Гурта и Вамбы). “It is getting dark (темнеет; to get – получить; становиться, делаться; dark – темный) and we need somewhere to stay for the night (и нам необходимо где-нибудь остановиться на ночь; to stay – останавливаться, делать паузу; останавливаться, жить, гостить).”
“The road isn’t easy to find (дорогу нелегко найти), and Cedric goes to bed very early (и Седрик ложится спать очень рано; bed – кровать, постель, ложе; to go to bed – ложиться спать),” answered Gurth (ответил Гурт).
“Don’t argue with us, slave (не спорь с нами, раб)!” shouted the Templar angrily (закричал тамплиер гневно; angry – рассерженный, сердитый; разгневанный) and was about to strike Gurth (и собрался ударить Гурта; to be about to do smth. – собираться, намереваться сделать что-либо).

“Can you tell us the way to Cedric the Saxon?” the Prior asked Gurth and Wamba. “It is getting dark and we need somewhere to stay for the night.”
“The road isn’t easy to find, and Cedric goes to bed very early,” answered Gurth.
“Don’t argue with us, slave!” shouted the Templar angrily and was about to strike Gurth.
The Prior quickly stopped the Templar (приор быстро остановил тамплиера/храмовника).
“Now, brother (ну же, брат; brother – брат; брат, член религиозного братства),” he said to the Templar, “you must not think that you are still in Palestine (вы не должны думать, что вы все еще в Палестине)!”
With a silver coin in his hand (с серебряной монетой в руке), the Prior turned to Wamba instead (приор обратился к Вамбе вместо этого; to turn – поворачивать; to turn to smb. – обращаться к кому-либо).

The Prior quickly stopped the Templar.
“Now, brother,” he said to the Templar, “you must not think that you are still in Palestine!”
With a silver coin in his hand, the Prior turned to Wamba instead.
“Tell us, good fellow, how do we get to Rotherwood?”
Wamba told him which road to take to Cedric’s house (Вамба сказал ему, какую дорогу выбрать к дому Седрика; to take – брать, хватать; выбирать) and took the coin from the Prior’s hand (и взял монету из руки приора).
When the riders had disappeared into the forest again (когда всадники скрылись в лесу снова; to disappear – исчезать /из поля зрения/; пропадать, теряться), Gurth turned to his friend and said (Гурт повернулся к своему другу и сказал), “If they follow your directions (если они последуют твоим указаниям; to follow – следовать, идти за; придерживаться, следовать, соблюдать; direction – адрес /на письме и т. п./; указание, как дойти, добраться куда-либо), they will certainly not get to our master’s house (то они точно не попадут к дому нашего хозяина)!”
Wamba grinned (Вамба ухмыльнулся; to grin – скалить зубы; осклабиться; ухмыляться). “No, but they may reach Sheffield instead (нет, но они, может быть, доберутся до Шеффилда вместо этого; to reach – протягивать, вытягивать; доезжать до; добираться до), which is a better place for them (который является лучшим местом для них = им там самое место).”

When the riders had disappeared into the forest again, Gurth turned to his friend and said, “If they follow your directions, they will certainly not get to our master’s house!”
Wamba grinned. “No, but they may reach Sheffield instead, which is a better place for them.”
As the Prior and the Templar rode on in the forest (пока приор и тамплиер ехали верхом по лесу; on – зд. указывает на продолжение действия), it soon became too dark (быстро стало слишком темно; soon – скоро, вскоре; быстро, в скором времени) for them to see the road clearly (/и они не могли/ видеть дорогу отчетливо: «для них, чтобы видеть дорогу отчетливо»; clear – светлый, ясный; четкий, отчетливый, ясно видимый). The man said (мужчина сказал) that he would show them the way himself (что он покажет им дорогу сам), and after a short while (и вскоре: «после недолгого промежутка времени»; short – короткий, недлинный; краткий; длящийся недолго; while – время, промежуток времени) they arrived at Rotherwood, the house of Cedric the Saxon (они прибыли в Ротервуд, дом Седрика Сакса).

As the Prior and the Templar rode on in the forest, it soon became too dark for them to see the road clearly. They stopped to ask a man sitting by the side of the road for directions to Cedric’s house. The man said that he would show them the way himself, and after a short while they arrived at Rotherwood, the house of Cedric the Saxon.
