Their conversation was interrupted when another visitor was announced. It was Isaac of York, an old Jew, who had been on his way to Ashby and had come in from the storm outside. Cedric welcomed the old man, but none of Cedric’s men would allow a Jew to sit down beside them. Only the pilgrim offered the old man some food and drink over by the fireplace.

When the Lady Rowena came into the hall at last (когда леди Ровена вошла наконец в залу), everyone stood up (все встали). When the Lady Rowena came into the hall at last, everyone stood up. She was a tall young woman with a beautiful face and clear blue eyes. The Prior noticed that the Templar was staring at her Saxon beauty.

He warned the Templar that Cedric had banished his own son for looking at Rowena in the same way. Cedric had promised his ward to Athelstane of Coningsburgh, a Saxon of royal blood. Nobody else, not even his own son, would be allowed to marry her.

As she sat down next to Cedric, Rowena also noticed the Templar’s look. She blushed and covered her face with a veil.

“What is the latest news from the Holy Land?” she asked the Templar.

“Were there any knights (были ли там рыцари) who fought bravely at the side of our King (которые сражались смело на стороне нашего короля = рядом с нашим королем; to fight – драться, сражаться; side – сторона; бок; край; пространство вблизи кого-либо/чего-либо)?” asked Cedric. “Richard is a Norman, of course (Ричард норманн, конечно), but I’ll have to forgive him for that (но мне придется простить его за это).”

“Yes,” replied the pilgrim from his dark corner beside the fireplace, “there were many very famous knights who fought with our brave King, but none of them were Templars! One of the knights with King Richard was young and less well known, however, and I don’t remember his name.”

“I know who you mean (я знаю, кого вы имеете в виду; to mean – намереваться, иметь в виду; думать, подразумевать),” interrupted the Templar angrily (прервал /его/ тамплиер гневно/сердито). “It is Wilfred of Ivanhoe (/это/ Уилфрид Айвенго)! “I know who you mean,” interrupted the Templar angrily. “It is Wilfred of Ivanhoe! If he were in England now, I would challenge him to fight against me in the tournament at Ashby in a few days. Otherwise, I will call him a coward in all of Europe!”

“I will speak for Ivanhoe (я скажу за Айвенго),” said Rowena proudly (сказала Ровена гордо), “and if he were here right now (и если бы он был здесь прямо сейчас), he would accept this challenge (то он бы принял этот вызов) and give this proud knight what he deserves (и воздал бы этому гордому рыцарю по заслугам; to give – давать, дарить; отдавать, воздавать /должное/; to deserve – заслуживать, быть достойным чего-либо)!”

Everyone raised their cups together with Cedric and cheered for the Lady Rowena.

“Unbelieving dog!” he said to Isaac. “So you are on your way to see the tournament at Ashby? I’m sure that you have a lot of money hidden away somewhere.”

“Money (денег)? But I am a poor man (но я бедный человек)!” exclaimed Isaac (воскликнул Исаак). “Even the clothes that I wear (даже одежда, которую я ношу) are borrowed from a friend (занята у друга; to borrow – занимать, брать на время).”
