The final decades of the eleventh century witnessed a profound religious and intellectual resurgence, often referred to as the "Gregorian Reformation" after Pope Gregory VII. This period was marked not only by renewed enthusiasm but also by a structural struggle for "the freedom of the Church" (libertas Ecclesiae) from secular, particularly imperial, authority.

However, as researchers have rightly noted, the concept of "freedom" during this period was complex and not identical to its modern meaning. It did not refer to personal autonomy in a romantic sense but rather to the corporate privilege and right of an institution—namely, the Church—to operate according to its own laws (canon law), free from secular interference.

The renowned French medievalist Georges Duby emphasized that the conflict between sacerdotium (the clergy) and regnum (the secular realm) was actually a struggle to define the hierarchy of these two universal powers, which in turn spurred the development of legal and logical thought. The Russian historian A. Y. Gurevich added that this conflict unleashed intellectual energy, creating the conditions for the systematic application of dialectics to theological issues—a practice that would ultimately form the core of scholasticism.

A key figure in this movement was Pope Gregory VII. His program of "liberating" the Church included not only political independence but also moral and intellectual renewal among the clergy. This reformist spirit, coupled with an emphasis on spiritual understanding, fostered the emergence of a new type of thinker—someone like Anselm.
