Предисловие

Настоящее учебное пособие является учебно-методической разработкой по домашнему чтению к собранию рассказов выдающегося английского писателя Роальда Даля «Абсолютно неожиданные истории» и предназначено для студентов гуманитарных специальностей Российского университета дружбы народов, изучающих английский язык по программе ДПО «Переводчик», а также для широкого круга лиц, изучающих английский язык.

Целью данного пособия является дальнейшее развитие и совершенствование компетенций чтения и говорения в процессе освоения аутентичного или адаптированного языкового материала сборника рассказов «Абсолютно неожиданные истории» Роальда Даля. Рассказы, которые легли в основу данного пособия, представлены в адаптированном варианте в серии Penguin Readers «Taste and other tales» Roald Dahl (Level 5) и в оригинальном варианте в издании «The Complete Short Stories: Volume One & Volume Two» by Roald Dahl (издательство Penguin).

Упражнения к рассказам направлены на изучение лексических и грамматических особенностей английского языка художественной литературы, а также на достижение полноты понимания прочитанного. Страницы, указанные в ряде упражнений, отсылают к адаптированному варианту сборника рассказов.

Автор выражает надежду, что предлагаемое учебное пособие окажется полезным как для преподавателей, так и для студентов, и позволит всем желающим ближе познакомиться с творчеством выдающегося английского писателя Роальда Даля.

Tales of the unexpected

Introduction

Roald Dahl (1916—1990) – a British novelist, short story writer, and fighter pilot. Dahl’s children books are known for their unsentimental, macabre, often darkly comic mood, featuring villainous adult enemies of the child characters and his short stories for their unexpected endings.

The fine line between roaring with laughter and crying because it’s a disaster is a very, very fine line. You see a chap slip on a banana skin in the street and you roar with laughter when he falls slap on his backside. If in doing so you suddenly see he’s broken a leg, you very quickly stop laughing and it’s not a joke anymore.

Tales of the Unexpected – a collection of short stories first published in 1979. Some short stories, used in this book, that weren’t part of the edition of 1979, was chosen as well for their unexpected endings. All stories demonstrates Dahl’s fascination with horror (with elements of black comedy), which is seen in both his adult fiction and his stories for children.
