Старый укрепленный анклав, увенчанный башнями город внутри города, терял свои функции по мере упадка расширенной семьи, и его место занял, в первую очередь во Флоренции и Венеции, огромный ренессансный палаццо; три высоких и просторных этажа, иногда достигавших высоты современного семиэтажного дома, образовывали новый мир уединенности и роскоши. Его фасад, декорированный фресками, резьбой, чеканкой, гербами, карнизами и пилястрами, скрывал сводчатые лестницы, арочные дворики и личные садики. Чтобы выглянуть из окна, надо было подняться по ступенькам в нишу с высокими окнами, заглянуть внутрь через окна было невозможно. Шедевры Уччелло, Фра Анжелико и других мастеров выставляли напоказ вкусы и претензии владельцев картин[913]. Беноццо Гоццоли украсил стены капеллы дворца Медичи великолепным «Поклонением волхвов», панорамой, где некоторые лица являются портретами членов семьи Козимо де Медичи[914].
На протяжении Средних Веков моногамный брак возобладал над полигамией и правом мужчины на развод, и его цель постепенно смещалась от реализации интересов родителей и родственников к удовлетворению потребностей супружеской четы. Основываемая семья, несмотря на передачу ею некоторых важных функций церкви, государству и обществу, укрепляла свои позиции в качестве основной ячейки западного общества. Древний клан утратил свое значение и исчез. Постоянно меняясь по своему составу на протяжении жизненного цикла, семейное домохозяйство уже господствовало на всех уровнях социального ландшафта, когда Средневековье незаметно пересекало порог Нового времени.
