Chapter 7: The Birthday Party

It is Nick’s birthday! He is nine years old today.

– "Happy birthday, Nick!" says Mum. She gives him a new bike.

– "Thank you!" shouts Nick. "It’s amazing!"

Nick invites his friends to his party: Mike, Emma, Tom, and Lily. They play games, eat cake, and laugh a lot.

– "Let’s play musical chairs!" says Lily.

– "Yes!" shout all the children.

Nick wins the game! He gets a small prize: a toy car.

Then, it’s time for cake. Mum brings a big chocolate cake with nine candles.

– "Make a wish, Nick!" says Mike.

Nick closes his eyes and blows out the candles. Everyone claps.

– "This is the best birthday!" says Nick.

– "Next year will be even better!" says Mike.

Chapter 8: The Secret Clubhouse

One rainy afternoon, Nick and Mike were bored at Nick's house.

– "Where?" Nick asked, his eyes lighting up.

– "In your garden! Behind the big bushes!"

The boys ran outside with an old blanket, some wooden planks Nick's dad had in the garage, and a cardboard box. It took them all afternoon to build their secret hideout.

– "This will be our headquarters!" Mike said proudly, hanging a hand-drawn sign that said "NO GIRLS ALLOWED" on the entrance.

The next day at school, they told Tom and Ben about their clubhouse.

– "Can we join your club?" Tom asked.

– "Only if you pass the test!" Mike said seriously.

The "test" turned out to be eating a spoonful of Nick's mom's super spicy chili sauce. When Tom turned red and drank three glasses of water, everyone laughed and let him in the club.

That weekend, the boys met in their clubhouse every day. They made a secret handshake, planned adventures, and even started a treasure map. But on Monday, Emma found their hideout.

– "I'm telling Mrs. Brown you have a 'no girls' sign!" she said angrily.

– "Wait!" Nick said quickly. "You can join… if you bring cookies tomorrow!"

Emma thought about it, then smiled.

– "Deal. But the sign comes down."

– "Ours will be the biggest!" Mike declared, stuffing five beans into their pot.
