Chapter 4

Refrigerator Runs but Does Not Cool

One of the most common refrigerator problems is a unit that appears to be operating normally but fails to keep food cold. The interior light works, the compressor may be running, and fans may be spinning, yet the temperature continues to rise.

Fortunately, this problem is often caused by an issue that can be identified through a logical inspection.

Always unplug the refrigerator before removing any covers or touching electrical components.

Step 1: Check the Temperature Settings

Begin with the simplest possibility.

Make sure the temperature controls have not been accidentally changed.

Recommended settings are:

— Refrigerator compartment: 37—40°F (3—4°C)

— Freezer compartment: 0°F (-18°C)

Wait at least 24 hours after changing the settings before judging the results.

Step 2: Make Sure the Doors Close Properly

Open and close each door several times.

Check for:

— Food containers preventing the door from closing.

— Dirty door gaskets.

— Torn or damaged seals.

— Doors that are not aligned correctly.

Warm air entering through a poor seal forces the refrigerator to work continuously while reducing cooling performance.

Step 3: Inspect the Condenser Coils

Dirty condenser coils are one of the most common causes of poor cooling.

Locate the coils and inspect them carefully.

If they are covered with dust or pet hair:

— Unplug the refrigerator.

— Clean the coils with a condenser brush.

— Vacuum all loose debris.

— Restore power and allow the refrigerator to operate for several hours.

Many refrigerators return to normal operation after a thorough cleaning.

Step 4: Check the Condenser Fan

Most modern refrigerators have a condenser fan located near the compressor.

Its purpose is to remove heat from the condenser coils.

If the fan does not operate:

— The compressor may become extremely hot.

— Cooling performance will decrease.

— Energy consumption may increase.

Inspect the fan blades for dust or objects that prevent rotation.

If the blades spin freely but the motor never starts, further electrical testing may be required.

Step 5: Listen to the Evaporator Fan

Open the freezer door.

On many models, pressing the door switch allows the evaporator fan to continue running while the door is open.

Listen carefully.
