CHAPTER ONE

The Call

Detective Sarah Mitchell had learned to dread the ring of her phone after midnight. It never brought good news.

The call came at 2:47 AM on a rain-soaked Tuesday in November. Sarah was already awake, sitting in her dimly lit kitchen, nursing a cup of coffee that had gone cold an hour ago. Sleep had become a stranger ever since the Morrison case.

"Mitchell," she answered, her voice rough from disuse.

"Detective, we've got a situation at the Blackwood Estate." It was Officer Chen, young and still enthusiastic despite what he must be seeing. "You need to come. Now."

Sarah closed her eyes for a moment, gathering herself. The Blackwood Estate. The old Victorian mansion that had stood empty for three years since the mysterious disappearance of the Blackwood family.

"Is it them?" she asked, already knowing the answer.

"We found someone. Inside the house."

Sarah was moving before Chen finished speaking, grabbing her coat and keys. The rain hammered against her windows as she rushed to her car, the old Ford sedan that had seen better days but still ran reliably.

Twenty minutes later, she pulled up to the gates of Blackwood Estate. The mansion loomed against the stormy sky, its Gothic spires reaching toward the clouds like grasping fingers. Police lights painted the grounds in alternating shades of red and blue.

Officer Chen met her at the entrance, his face pale beneath his cap. "Detective, you should see this. But... it's strange."

"Strange how?"

"The person we found. They're not speaking. Just sitting in the library, staring at the wall. And Detective..." Chen hesitated. "They knew we were coming. They've been waiting."

The library was exactly as it had been documented in the original missing persons case: pristine, untouched, frozen in time. Dust covered every surface, but there were fresh footprints leading to the large leather chair by the fireplace.

Sitting in that chair was a young woman, perhaps in her late twenties. She wore clothes that looked too big for her thin frame, and her dark hair hung in tangled waves around her face. But it was her eyes that caught Sarah's attention—clear, alert, and watching everything with an intensity that made the detective uncomfortable.

"Hello," Sarah said softly, keeping her voice neutral. "I'm Detective Mitchell. Can you tell me your name?"

The woman didn't respond. She simply continued staring at the wall across from her, where an empty space suggested a painting had once hung.

Sarah tried again. "The officer tells me you've been waiting for us. Can you tell me what you're waiting for?"

Still nothing. But then, slowly, the woman raised her hand and pointed at the empty space on the wall.

Sarah exchanged a glance with Chen. "The painting? You're pointing at where the painting used to be?"

The woman nodded once.

"Okay," Sarah said, pulling out her notebook. "Let's start over. I'm going to ask you some questions. You can nod for yes, shake your head for no. Can we try that?" Another nod.

Progress, Sarah thought. "Are you part of the Blackwood family?" Head shake. No.

"Did you know them?" Nod. Yes.

"Were you here when they disappeared?"

The woman's expression changed, just for a moment. Fear? Guilt? Sarah couldn't tell. Then she nodded.

Sarah's pulse quickened. "You witnessed what happened to the Blackwood family?"

This time, the woman closed her eyes. When she opened them again, she reached into the pocket of her oversized sweater and pulled out a small notebook.
