The room fell silent again. Only Murik the cat, peeking out from under the sofa, let out a long meow, as if mourning the significant loss.
Part 5. «The Sea is Stirring»
The sunbeams, unwitting witnesses to the robbery, froze in confusion, much like in the game «The Sea is Stirring.» According to the game’s rules, after the words: «Sea figure, freeze!» the participants must freeze in place without moving a millimeter. The first to move becomes the next leader!
Even the twins’ father, Sam, felt his heart sink at the sight of the robbers – a natural reaction for any sunbeam. But Sam was not like the others. He was considered the bravest sunbeam in the neighborhood. Recovering from the initial shock, Sam quickly pulled himself together and began comforting the household.
«If those bandits had come earlier, we would all be captives now! But we are free!» he cheered, putting on a brave face.
His courage was inherited from his father, just like the letter «S» from his father’s name, Bucks. By tradition, the names of sunbeams began with the last letter of their parent’s name, similar to the «Cities» word game.
The winter sky darkened, lulling the attention of any onlookers, while a cunning cloud, like a magician’s black hat, covered the drowsy sun, and all the sunbeams vanished at once, as if they had never been in the room.
Ursula, Juris’s girlfriend and a former prize-winning survival rally driver, was waiting for the brothers at the wheel of an old Renault. «Boy on a horse, girl in a sleigh. Right?» she greeted them with her favorite Santa Claus saying. Unnoticed by anyone, the kidnappers leisurely loaded their loot into the car with Latvian license plates and disappeared in an unknown direction. They were headed for a secret hideout they called their «den.» There, the crooks stored their stolen goods, rested, and prepared for new crimes. Without wasting any time, Maris and Juris placed a newspaper advertisement selling the antique vase. They hoped to get a tidy sum for it to finally go on a long-awaited vacation back to their homeland.
