Житие святого Махута (Мало)
Святой Мало – другой мореплаватель
Прежде чем мы обратимся к жизни святого, хотелось бы отметить странное положение Бретани среди других кельтских стран и регионов, которое, несомненно, влияет на наше восприятие раннесредневековых бретонских святых. Бретань в составе Франции считается всего лишь исторической областью, поэтому ее святые в европейском контексте имеют скорее региональный характер, и никому из них не удалось стать «национальным» святым подобно Патрику в Ирландии или Давиду в Уэльсе. Тем не менее святой Мало, о котором у нас пойдет речь, принадлежит к особой плеяде семи святых-основателей Бретани, по сути основателей бретонской нации, по крайней мере в средневековом значении natio. Известны другие святые-основатели: Павел Аврелиан, Бриок, Тугдуал, Самсон, Патерн и Корентин. Кроме последнего все они, согласно традиции, происходили из современного Уэльса. Важно, что жития св. Мало были написаны в IX в., более чем через двести лет после его смерти, поэтому вряд ли можно считать их достоверными историческими источниками. Они полны красочных описаний чудес и невероятных приключений во время скитаний и плаваний святого. Речь в них идет о разных регионах Западной Европы, где подвизался святой – от Оркнейских островов на севере до Аквитании на юге, от Южного Уэльса до Восточной Бретани. Более того, на основании житийной литературы довольно сложно составить впечатление о личности и характере святого Мало, скорее перед нами некий образец дальнезападной святости, а не реальный монах-мореплаватель.
