Ivan Kniaziev – When Lovers Become Strangers (страница 2)
I tried to shorten it.
I tried to fill the gaps with effort, with understanding, with explanations.
I told myself that love requires work – and I was willing to do it.
What I didn’t understand then was this:
Love can survive distance, but it cannot survive indifference.
The more I tried to hold us together, the more I felt myself slipping away from who I was.
I became careful with my words.
I learned to suppress emotions to avoid conflict.
I accepted less, hoping it would somehow turn into more.
But it never does.
Distance measured in silence has no bridge.
No map.
No clear path back.
One evening, after another conversation that felt empty, I sat alone and asked myself a question I had been avoiding for weeks:
How long can you stay where you are no longer wanted?
The answer didn’t come immediately.
But the feeling did.
And it was heavy.
That was when I realized that the space between us was no longer temporary.
It had become permanent – not because of circumstances, but because of choice.
Not mine.

The Silence Between Words**
Silence has many forms.
There is the silence of peace – when nothing needs to be said.
And there is the silence that screams – when everything that matters is being avoided.

Was it something I said?
Something I failed to say?
Or was it simply the point where effort stopped being mutual?
Silence is rarely empty.
It is filled with unspoken decisions.
I learned that night after night, when the phone stayed quiet longer than it used to.
When “goodnight” lost its warmth.
When I stopped expecting to be missed.
The most painful part wasn’t the absence of words – it was the absence of curiosity.
No one asked how my day truly felt.
No one wanted to know what weighed on my mind.
And slowly, without realizing it, I began doing the same.
Not out of spite.
Out of exhaustion.
Silence teaches you restraint.
It teaches you how to survive without asking for too much.
It teaches you how to disappear while still being present.
But love cannot breathe in that space.
I understood then that silence isn’t always a pause before reconciliation.
Sometimes it is the sound of someone already leaving – quietly, carefully, so they don’t have to face what they’re abandoning.
That night, I didn’t feel angry.
I felt hollow.
And for the first time, I wondered if the silence between us was no longer a problem to be solved —
