Ivan Kniaziev – What Remains After Goodbye (страница 5)

“Yes,” she said. “But not by accident.”

She walked away before he could answer.

Ethan stood there for a moment, watching her disappear into the crowd.

He didn’t feel abandoned.

He felt chosen.

And that, he realized, was something entirely new.

Chapter Four

Ethan tried not to count the days between their meetings.

It would have turned the thing between them into a schedule, and schedules were dangerous. They created expectations. They made you believe that what you had could be repeated on demand, that people would show up simply because they had shown up before.

Still, he noticed.

He noticed when three days passed without a message from Mira. He noticed how his apartment sounded louder at night when the city outside went quiet. He noticed that he started carrying the book she’d chosen in his bag, even when he didn’t open it, as if having it close made the week feel less empty.

On the fourth day, she texted.

Are you free tonight?

He replied immediately.

Yes.

A pause.

Then:

Come to the old tram depot near West Lane. Bring patience. And wear shoes you don’t mind sacrificing.

He stared at the message, amused and curious in equal measure.

Sacrificing to what?

To paint. And bad decisions.

He smiled.

On my way.
