Дмитрий Леонтьев – Terrible (страница 10)
“What?” Charlie’s jaw dropped. “What cemetery?” he asked again.
“The one near our village, the cemetery before the last turn on the way here,” Thomas explained.
“Yeah! I remember that cemetery,” Charlie said. “You said ‘her body’… Does it mean she is dead? What happened?”
“Last night, the local police station got a phone call,” Thomas began to say. “The cemetery caretaker reported that he had come across an unidentified female body, deeply bruised and with multiple cuts, which was hanging from a tree,” Thomas paused and suddenly offered, “A cup of coffee, maybe? Tea?”
“No! No,” Charlie objected, “Keep going.”
“Then the police arrived at that horrendous scene. Among the policemen, there was Jack Taylor, my neighbor. He had already known that one of my colleagues was missing so he called me deep in the night and asked me to identify the body. I was working the night shift and he suggested delivering the body to this hospital. In about thirty minutes, Lara’s body was delivered here,” Thomas paused and took out a pack of cigarettes from the desk drawer.
“Where is she now?” Charlie asked nervously.
Without saying anything, Thomas pulled out one cigarette from the pack, lit the lighter inhaled deeply and answered, “She is right here. There’s going to be a post-mortem to determine the cause of death.”
“Oh my Gosh!” Charlie exclaimed and covered eyes with his hands.
After a short pause, he opened his eyes and said, “Well, I would like to be present at the post-mortem to learn why she had died.”
Thomas let out the smoke from his mouth, then stood up and asked, “Are you really sure you want to see that?”
“Yes,” Charlie confirmed and stood up from his chair.
Thomas stubbed out his cigarette and said, “Come on, Charlie, let’s go then.”
They both walked out of Thomas’s office and went along a long dark corridor until they came to the door with a metal plate above it which read “Morgue”. Thomas took out a key and carefully inserted it into the keyhole. The door opened and they went inside.
Thomas showed Charlie to one of the tables where a body was lying covered with impenetrable cloth.
“She is here,” he said.
“Let’s see,” Charlie spoke.
Thomas grabbed the edge of the cloth and quickly removed it.
“Oh Jesus,” Charlie reacted to the sight and stepped back as it unexpectedly disgusted him.
CHAPTER 16
“Christina,” Emma called her daughter and came up to her. “What is that?” she asked her and took hold of her hand to get a better look.
Christina also looked at her right arm and noticed a little bruise on it.
“I have no idea,” Christina answered utterly puzzled.
“Do you know where you could have gotten it from?” Emma asked and looked closer.
