Или пусть будет так: механик вырвал двигатель с корнем и переделал его в «шедевр» современного искусства, а к патрубку приклеил бирку, на которой аккуратно вывел: «Этот двигатель – символ упадка западной цивилизации». И ваши мысли принимают убийственный (в прямом смысле слова) оборот. Вы представляете, как похитите механика, запрете его в кабине пилота, прицепите самолет на буксир, подниметесь на девять километров над уровнем моря – и сбросите самолет с механиком вниз, а к штурвалу в кабине пилота будет прилеплена та же самая бирка, только слова «…западной цивилизации» вы зачеркнете, а вместо них напишете «…моего самолета с тобой».

Вот так начался и закончился мой путь вдохновенного автора. К чему эта притча? Наше общество и есть такой самолет. Мы создаем его сами. Он может без усилий подняться в небо, а может упасть и взорваться – в зависимости от того, как он сконструирован. Я представляю себе эту идею, и мне такой мотивации хватает. И меня вдохновляют религиозные верования, сочетающие в себе трезвый фактический реализм и глубокое уважение к символам, названным «священными»; примеры таких я и привел в своей книге. Так давайте же, словно дикарь-нуэр и балийский землепашец, познаем, для чего существуют наши объединяющие системы – и воздадим им должное в вере, переполняющей нас.
