In the movie ("The Matrix") is a simulation system created by artificial intelligence to control humanity. This image is taken as an allegory: our world can be a "program", and we are sleepers until we wake up.

The ancient meaning is the Latin matrix, which means "mother", "source". That is, the matrix = the "mother basis" from which everything else is born.

It turns out that The Matrix is both a prison of illusions, and a cradle of birth, and a hidden program. It all depends on whether you look at it as a prisoner, or as someone who knows how to rewrite it.
