Город наполнен преступниками всех мастей, и я знаю каждого из них. Кинг привносит глубокие моральные вопросы в сюжет, заставляя читателя задуматься о цене жизни и справедливости. Книга остается недооцененной, несмотря на продуманный сюжет и эмоциональные персонажи. Кинг методично "ломает" город, выявляя его темные стороны и заставляя жителей столкнуться со своими грехами. Главный вопрос остается актуальным: стоит ли жертвовать одной жизнью ради спасения других? Нравственный конфликт между этикой и рационализмом формирует основу сюжета, заставляя читателя задуматься о глубоких моральных принципах.

Sometimes life presents a brutal choice to a person. Sometimes you don't even want to choose, but you have to. Sometimes you want to walk away from the game, but it's impossible. Sometimes choices are made for you. It's a tough world out there, where you can pay a little or a lot, or even everything you have. The book's format is unique: it's a screenplay, not a novel, but also not a play, something in between. King clearly explains in the preface why this task is both challenging and interesting. From my point of view, the author succeeded 100%. The plot is standard for King: a small town, in this case an island, where everyone simmers in their own juice until Full Pea arrives. Then all the wounds are opened one by one, the sweethearts turn out not to be so innocent, people go crazy, and the apocalypse is near. If the essence of King's work was only in the plot twists, it wouldn't be worth taking on, but this writer is devilishly psychological, and he writes not about external horrors, but about what's inside. The emotional torments - those daily nightmares - that he brings out in his works. This book is not even about horror or murder, at least for me, it's about these damn torments of choice, when there will always be pain, when you want to bang your head against the wall, run away, forget, but you can't change anything. It's about small towns and the amazing adaptability of their residents, about the ability not to forgive, to forget, to collectively carry the feeling of guilt and hide it together: "It wasn't me, I was forced, I didn't want to." It's about the secrets hidden behind every door and every heart. Think about what terrible things Andre Linoge will find by looking into your soul? What will he unearth that can drive you crazy? After reading this, I thought: in life, I haven't done anything illegal, but everyone has some unprocessed and unforgiven moment behind their soul, something to be ashamed of, something they don't want to bring to light, right? Will there be a person who will say to Andre in response: "Hey, man, I'm not ashamed, it was within the norms?" The problem is that we all have something to be ashamed of, it's human nature. And if that's the case, we can be manipulated. That's what the infamous dark figure did: he killed and manipulated. It's that simple. But with a skillful approach, there's always a chance to get what you want, only after there will be ruins. But when did manipulators care about that? And when did people in their masses know how to resist it? And even more so individually.
